Back to Top HOME Ride to Music with Michael MatsonBy Cristiana Camardella
Who is Michael Matson and what's the clinic about?
If you don't recognize the name already, Michael Matson is a frequent contributor to the Ultimate Dressage Bulletin Board (aka UDBB, at http://www.ultimatedressage.com/), especially on the Freestyle section. Check it out, if you are not a member or a "lurker" already. His screen name is Mike Matson.
One of the highlights of his posts was the 3 days he got to spend with the Spanish Riding School during their visit to Washington DC. He was one of the guests at the Austrian Embassy for the reception, where he rubbed elbows with the riders and had the pleasure of having a long conversation with Rider Rudolf Rosteck (you may want to read more of his Austrian adventure at http://www.ultimatedressage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t-70953&highlight=srs")
Michael is also a member of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Freestyle Committee, and co-founder and committee member of The Dressage Foundation’s Dancing Horse Fund. He is an active promoter of freestyles in USDF Region 1 including $5,000 in freestyle prize money for the recognized show at Foxcroft, Middleburg, Virginia, and $10,000 in prize money for The Pas de Deux Challenge Cup at the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute, Middleburg, Virginia. Michael is also the sponsor for The Pegasus Grants which support freestyle riders in the Commonwealth Dressage and Combined Training Association (CDCTA). He is an adult amateur rider and has competed in freestyles at First Level and Pas de Deux.
Because of his interest in music and horses, Michael has created a free on-line resource--http://www.equimusic.com--for freestyle enthusiasts. It is a database of music selected to work for the walk, trot, and canter gaits. Each month it grows with new selections, thereby ensuring a variety of music to try for your horse. Not only that. There are also instructions on how to determine your horses bpm (beats per minute) and basic instructions on how to set up a freestyle.
However, if you really want to do it proficiently, you should participate or audit his "Ride to Music Clinic" which, I'm sure you know, will be held at Dolly Broyle's farm "Wellspring Farm" in Glen Rock, PA, on May 6th.
Mike doesn't require any information ahead of the clinic. As he tells each rider, he's not there to watch how well they or their horse are doing, He's there to find music that fits the horse and to show riders how much FUN they can have riding to music!! He indicates that regarding musical preferences, one of the fun parts of the clinic is when people sometimes tell him what music they think will work and he then finds music they never thought of that fits the horse perfectly!
In a highly interactive "jam session" clinic, Michael will bring over 700 pieces of timed music at the walk, trot, and canter. For each horse, the beats per minute at the walk, trot, and canter are determined. Relying on input from riders, auditors (and the horse!), clinic participants discover walk, trot, and canter music appropriate for their horse. A full stereo system is used to ensure the music is clearly heard and "felt" by riders, horses, and auditors. Riders from all disciplines are encouraged to attend, as well as Pas de Deux, Quadrille, and drill teams!
If you have always wanted to do a freestyle and have just been waiting to "come round to it", or you just don't know where to start, or you just want to see how riding to music can help the horse and rider achieve relaxation and regular tempos at each gait, don't miss this opportunity! The cost couldn't be more reasonable: $75 to ride and $10.00 to audit (Non MDA members Cost: $100 to ride and $15 to audit). Note that each session will last about 1 and a half hours.
Please contact Mary Butler at Mbutler500@aol.com or 410-239-6109.
As a precaution, due to the recent outbreaks of EHV-1 every participant will be required to provide the organizer with proof of recent flu/rhino vaccination. This can be in the form of a letter of your vet, or simply a copy of the bill or statement from the vet. As usual, a copy of the most recent negative Coggins test is also required.

Karen Robinson will teach a Musical Freestyle Clinic on May
28-29 at Windsor Manor in Sandy Spring, MD. Karen has
designed freestyles for some of the top international riders,
including Leslie Reid (and her winning GP Freestyle at Devon
last year), Leslie Morse, Tom Dvorak, and Julia Vysniauskas.
See more about her at her website,
www.applausedressage.com.
Karen will teach a 3 hour seminar the morning of Saturday,
May 28, which will include watching videos and learning how
freestyles are designed and judged. Everyone is welcome to
attend this seminar, which should be a lot of fun, whether you
plan to ride a freestyle in the near future or not. The cost will
be $20.
Karen will also be teaching private sessions to help riders
develop their own freestyles, May 28-29. She recommends
taking two sessions to cover the whole design process if you
have not designed a freestyle before. First, she will help you
determine your horse's individual tempos for trot and canter.
Then she will help you match appropriate music to those
tempos (she brings a LOT of music with her!). On the second
day, she helps you choreograph the movements to music. Of
course, riders may also choose to take only one session. The
cost for each 45 minute private session will be $100 (and
includes free attendance at the seminar).
